Forestry Technician (Fire) Engine Captain, GS-0462-7/8

Serve as the supervisor of a wildland fire engine crew with 4 or more crewmembers. Supervise and perform wildland firefighting work directly related to fire suppression and control activities including suppression, preparedness, prevention, monitoring, hazardous fuels reduction, and prescribed burning. Directs the operation of a wildland fire engine. Ensures correct positioning, use, and operation including starting pump engine, priming pump, adjusting speed and pump valves, hose lays, and nozzle use. Provides technical and administration to a wildland fire engine crew. Plans work, sets and adjusts priorities, and schedules completion of work. Makes work assignments, develops performance standards and evaluates work. Provides for crew safety and welfare. Gathers and considers information on weather data, topography, fuel types, and fire behavior. Assists in the preparation of hazardous fuels treatment plans, and burn plans. Drafts prescribed fire perimeter maps, and monitors smoke dispersal and fire effects. Communicates with fire crew and others in the organization to gather and exchange information and balance and distribute workload. Communicates with the general public and land owners. Prepares required reports and status information. The applicant must have possessed all of the following National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) incident management qualifications and training requirements to be considered eligible for this position:
1. Engine Boss (ENGB) Certification 2. Incident Commander Type 4 (ICT4) Certification This position is covered by the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S.C. 8336 (c) and 5 U.S.C. 8412 (d) as a Primary/Rigorous Firefighter. Applicants must not have reached their 37th birthday upon appointment to this position unless there is sufficient prior Federal service in a covered position to permit retirement on or before the mandatory retirement age for this type of position. An exception is allowed if you are a qualified veteran preference eligible. To qualify at the GS-07 grade level for this position, applicants must also possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
Experience:
At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position and must have included work in, or directly related to, forest or range fire control, prevention, or suppression. Examples of specialized experience for this position includes personally performing and/or leading others in one or more of the following wildland firefighting functions:
serving as a lead firefighter on a fire suppression hand-crew; a prescribed fire crew; a wildland fire engine crew; a wildland fire helitack crew; or other forestry technician or comparable position performing wildland fire related work. You must include hours per week worked -OR- EDUCATION:
Successful completion of at least one full year of graduate level I have one year of graduate level college education in a field directly related to wildland fire work such as a major study in forestry, fire science or a field directly related to this position that has equipped me with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of this position. A copy of your transcripts is required. -OR- COMBINATION:
Successful completion of a COMBINATION of education and experience as described above. You must include transcripts. To qualify at the GS-08 grade level for this position, applicants must also possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
A. I possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position. (1) personally performing in Wildland Fire Engine Operations, and at least one of the following wildland fire-fighting functions:

initial attack and suppression hand-crew operations; prescribed fire operations; wildland fire engine crew operations; helitack fire crew operations; providing on-the-job training and conducting daily crew briefings, safety sessions, and/or other basic wildland fire training. B. I have completed one year (18 semester hours) of graduate level education directly related to the position. Examples of related education include forestry, wildland fire science, or other directly related sciences. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be 18 semester hours. You must provide transcripts at time of application. C. I have a combination of specialized experience and directly related graduate education that qualifies me for the position. Experience:
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must include months/years, hours per week worked and salary to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as varies. Additional Conditions of Employment, continued Prior to appointment, you must be determined physically fit by an authorized government physician to perform strenuous and physically demanding duties; and also pass a medical examination (which includes vision, hearing, cardiovascular, and mobility of extremities) given by an authorized government physician. You will also be required to undergo periodic medical examinations throughout employment. The Work Capacity Test (WCT-Pack Test) as a method for assessing an employee's fitness levels for fire qualifications in the positions covered by this recruitment notice. Employees required to pass a WCT-Pack Test as a condition of employment will be provided one opportunity to pass the required test with a second chance provided at the discretion of management based on the results of the first test. Arduous fitness (WCT-Pack Test) will consist of completing a three-mile hike, within 45 minutes, while carrying a 45 pound pack. A time of 45 minutes, the passing score for the test, approximates an aerobic fitness score of 45, the established standard for firefighters. Applicants shall be disqualified for appointment if they fail to meet any physical requirement. Probationary or seasonal employment is subject to termination for failure to meet the 25th percentile in each of the identified component being measured.

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
